Moments with mojita debut with Oilixia founder, Alexandra Jansons

I couldn’t be more excited to pop this cherry than with my favorite brand as of late, Oilixia. Not only do I get the pleasure of using her products, but I get to interview her here, for you all to see and find answers to your deepest questions, and also get a better understanding of the amazing woman behind the brand.

A little background on how it became thatI wanted to interview Oilixia founder Jansons; I was gifted two of their products, the gummy cleanser and explorer face oil. I was immediately drawn in by the composition of natural ingredients and soft texture. I have been using the products for over two months now and have noticed a difference in my complexion, smoothness, and blemishes. So, without further adue, let me introduce you to the amazing Aussie founder…

1. How did you come up with the name Oilixia & what does it mean to you?

The name Oilixia came from a fusion of two different words: OIL, because many of the natural ingredients that we use in our products are oil-based; and LIXIA which is a play on the word Elixir, analchemic preparation. The name Oilixia demonstrates that our plant-based products are very potent, precious and can work like magic on the skin!

2. What made you want to start a business? What research did you do?

I have always dreamed of running my own business since I was a young child. My parents owned a small business together and being surrounded by ‘business chat’ in our household had a lasting impact on me. I’m forever curious and love to try new things, so wanting to start a business came quite naturally to me. However, actually knowing where to start was a whole other matter. The three key pieces of advice I would give someone wanting to start a business is to 1). focus on an area that you are either passionate about or know quite well. 2) Ask lots of questions and don’t be afraid to ask for help from the network of people around you. Quite often, people are happy to help if you ask nicely, and if they can’t help they might know someone that can. 3). If in doubt, Google it. Really! So many times became a bit stuck with questions like ‘how do you make a barcode for a product?’ and ‘how do you do a VAT return’ and Google really came in handy.

3. What is your favorite ingredient in your products that you can’t live without?

One of my favourite ingredients at the moment is Kakadu Plum. It’s an incredible fruit that is native to the northern region of Australia. The most interesting thing about it is that it contains the highest amount of Vitamin C out of any plant in the world! Used in a skincare product it has great brightening and antioxidant properties, so it’s the perfect fit for our Gummy Cleanser. We source our Kakadu Plum from anIndigenous community in the Kimberley Region in Australia, where the plant is wild harvested, meaning that it is picked by hand with no detriment to the natural environment or plant itself.

4. What’s your favorite ingredient in the gummy cleanser and face oil?

We use Cacay oil in each of our products, but it is in the highest concentration in our Amazonian Cacay Facial Oil. It’s an incredible oil because it’s a rich natural source of Retinol. In fact, it has 3x more Retinol than Rosehip oil and more Vitamin E and Vitamin F than Argan oil. We source our oil from Colombia, where the Cacay Tree was historically logged for its wood which contributed to the deforestation of theAmazon Rainforest. The company we work with is actively replanting Cacay Trees to reforest the Amazon and provide sustainable income to families in the area, who harvest the Cacay nuts by hand. So far, they have replanted 100,000 trees and are aiming to plant a further 120,000 this year!

5. If you could give another woman who is starting a business advice what would it be?

The advice that I love to give is that if you don’t try, you will never know. So, what is the harm in trying? However, do be prepared for a LOT of work ahead of you if you want to make it a success. It’s rare to become an ‘overnight’ success, instead building a business requires daily consistent effort before it really takes momentum, and you really need to ask yourself if you are prepared for the road ahead. If you do start, try not to give up too soon, it does take some time to get going.

6. What is ONE message you want to send out into the world?

That you can find very powerful ingredients in nature. However, it is also important to be conscious in the way that these ingredients are gathered and harvested if we want to leave the planet in a better place for future generations.

7. What has surprised you the most about starting your own business?

Starting a business has been a huge learning curve. Sometimes I get frustrated and think I am not moving fast enough, that there’s not enough time, not enough money. It never ends! But, when I look back at the journey and think about what I have learnt along the way it’s really quite amazing, from learning about ingredients, marketing, social media, accounting, book keeping, figuring out the optimal way to pack a box – you wear a lot of hats! My favourite thing about running a business is the people that I have met over the last few years. It’s actually rather incredible that there are so many supportive people out there and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to get anywhere without them, which I will be forever grateful for.

I hope you all enjoyed the interview with Jansons, got a better understanding of her products and maybe, if you have a desire to start your own business, got some clarity and direction.
